Laptop Repair

Laptop damages or faults can occur often and the first stage with any repair case is for the owner to decide whether they can resolve the problem themselves, or if the device needs professional attention.

Laptop Screen Repairs

Damaged screens often require replacement, but there are scenarios where certain components that can cause a screen to fail or to go very dark. Screens can be sent in to various companies who can take a look at the problem and recommend what action should be taken. The advantages with screen parts are that they can be interchangeable between models and brands, unlike many laptop parts.

For example, a display used in Dell model may also be used or transferred in a HP or a Compaq model. It is also often cheaper to send the laptop in for repair, rather than trying to carry out the repair yourself.

CPU & other internal Repairs

Most repairs to do with these tend to fall into the following two categories:

1. Your laptop fails to turn on

2. Your laptop starts but then behaves erratically, or fails to perform any tasks.

Before sending in your laptop for repairs there are a couple of things worth trying out; First try to remove the battery and removable optical (i.e. CDROM) drives and establish if the machine will boot from mains power (some laptops will not boot with a failed battery fitted). Another mini test that can be carried out is to remove the hard drive and then see if the machine powers up.

If your machine runs but then behaves erratically it will most likely have either a hardware or software problem. If you are a computer novice and feel computer software and hardware issues will pose you a problem then receive professional help.

Damaged keyboards & hard drives

These parts of a laptop can be replaced by users themselves without much difficulty. However if any complications arise then professional would be recommended.

It is worth finding out the following from the repair company you choose to go with:

Repair Time

Most laptop repairs do not take very long, but this can depend on whether certain parts are stocked locally by the company or orders need to be made. Ask for telephone or email updates on progress.

Packaging

Make sure your laptop is well packaged before sending off for repairs. It should be placed inside a strong box with at least three inches of clearance all around the laptop and plenty of packing. Also ensure that you use an insured courier service, as most companies are not liable for any machine that is not intact when received.

Terms & Conditions

Remember to thoroughly go through the ‘Repair Terms and Conditions’ policy before sending your laptop off.

Software

It is worth asking your chosen repair company if they provide a reinstallation service for your operating system and/or drivers. This service will normally come with an extra charge.

Upgrades

Upgrading laptop memory and hard drives might also be carried out by the repair company, so it is worth asking. Extra charges generally apply.
