Asus G50 Laptop Review

Asus seemed to have designed this beast of a laptop to grab your attention. The lid itself even though only a shiny, glossy, black lid is a masterpiece. The black is interrupted by the silver strips on the lid, the silver caps on the hinge edges and the silver bits on the Asus logo. This laptop also has silver strips on the sides of the lid which, when powered up, glow blue.

Once you open the lid it seems like someone went LED mad. The keyboard is surrounded by an enclosure of LED lights and the shortcut buttons just above and to the right of the keyboard are also crowded by a number of LED lights.

It seems though that Asus couldn’t get it right second time around. After placing the trackpad in a nice position in the Eee PC S101 they have failed to deliver again. The trackpad seems so close to the wrist rest that most people will end up, accidentally, rubbing their palms all over it.

Yet the keyboard is just right. The keyboard is large, comfortable and easy to use. It comes with a squished numerical keypad on the far right and the grid layout of the keys will come in handy, if you like entering numbers.

The Asus graphics card is a Nivida GeForce 9700M GT, which is faster than most of them. It packs a 512MB of dedicated memory and finds it a walk on the park to move a few polygons around.

A gaming laptop obviously needs a huge amount of space, so obviously Asus have provided this laptop with two 320GB hard disks. None the less Asus have also provided the G50 with a digital TV tuner which can record television at the touch of a button.

The G50 is an attractive, purpose bult, decent laptop that comes with a stunning performance. It’s battery life may only just top an hour but a gaming laptop of this size shouldn’t be carried around. Laptops.co.uk would label this beauty more of a Media Machine than a gaming laptop as it isn’t the best, but its HDMI output and Blu-ray combo player and digital TV tuner seem to do the trick.

Conclusion: 4 out of 5.
