Hewlett-Packard is recalling about 15,700 HP and Compaq laptop computer batteries worldwide because of a burn and fire hazard, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission said today.
The recall covers lithium ion batteries manufactured in January 2005, with barcodes starting with L3. The affected units were made in China and sold in the USA through December 2005. The batteries are used in several HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario notebook models.
"Consumers should stop using the 'L3' coded batteries immediately and contact HP to determine if the specific battery is one of the ones being recalled, and if it is, receive a free replacement battery," the commission said.
According to the spokesperson, affected batteries have the potential to overheat, causing the notebook to melt or smoke.
HP stressed that the issues are limited to the batteries and do not affect the actual notebooks . As users await their replacement battery, they will be able to use their computers with the power adapter.
The company had to recall 135,000 laptop batteries last year, but insisted that the two incidents are not related.
