Samsung Unveil Fuel Cell Powered Laptop
Thu, 16 Aug 2007
Electronics giant Samsung has unveiled a new longer-lasting laptop that runs on fuel cells, allowing it to last for up to a month.

Called The Sense Q35, it comes equipped with a high-capacity fuel cell storage system that, the manufacturers claim, allows it to operate for eight hours a day and five days a week for a month without recharging.

The revolutionary laptop was revealed at the company showroom in Korea where it was announced that the Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) will provide an energy density of 650 Wh/L and has total energy storage of 12,000Wh.

In addition, Samsung said it has overcome previous noise problems that were attributed with fuel cell powered laptops, and now the new system is no louder than conventional laptops .

Roger Kay, Endpoint Technologies Associates principal analyst, said: "Fuel cell technology is on the brink. It's coming."

"There's still engineering to be worked out, which is why it's not on the shelves yet. But fuel cells are very promising for the future."

Although it has been suggested that the laptop power-station is quite large and bulky, it is slimmer than other fuel cell powered laptops currently being developed.

Samsung are in the process of carrying out further safety tests on The Sense Q35, and has hinted that the laptop should be available on the market by the end of the year.
