Crackdown on Lithium Laptop Batteries
Mon, 31 Dec 2007
New rules have come into effect as of New Year’s Day regarding spare lithium batteries when travelling on planes . The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has voiced concerns due to the volatile nature of the batteries, with the batteries’ uncovered electrical exterior vulnerable to exploding if touched by other metal objects.

Significantly, passengers are still allowed to travel with devices containing such batteries, it is simply spare batteries that concern the TSA presently. Such devices typically include laptops, MP3 players and similar electrical objects. Furthermore, most batteries will remain eligible to be carried onto planes in your hand luggage, though you will no longer be able to pack spare lithium batteries in your checked luggage.

There are exceptions to this rule, with some spare batteries deemed safe to be packed in your checked luggage.
