Users of Hewlett Packard laptops may be particularly vulnerable to hacking attacks, a security researcher has suggested. The researcher, who goes by the name porkythepig, revealed to BugTraq that the HPInfoDLL.dll file, one of the ActiveX controls in the HP Info Centre, leaves some models of Hewlett Packard laptops particularly vulnerable to remote attacks.
The researcher suggested that laptop users may be conned into accessing a specially created website, which would then allow the attacker to harm the relevant Active X control. By compromising this file, the attacker may then alter registry information, access sensitive data or install malware.
BugTraq offers a list of vulnerable Hewlett Packard laptops, whilst the researcher has made a website offering ways in which to prevent such an attack.
