The One Laptop Per Child scheme has been faced with yet another stumbling block after it emerged that Nigerian-owned firm Lagos Analysis Corporation are to sue the scheme for patent infringement. The US-based company claim the US based company are infringing Nigeria patent (RD8489) which relates to its Shift2 keyboard driver source codes.
Following the news that Nigeria had agreed to buy a million of the OLPC laptops, Lagos claims that the non-profit organization is using the technology that appears in Lagos Konyin Multilingual Keyboards. Although the OLPC and Konyin keyboards are different, Lagos is claiming OLPC have ripped off the technology they developed to enable a multi-lingual keyboard including accents and symbols.
OLPC has already encountered several problems in its attempts to sell its laptops. Along with several education ministers casting doubt over whether laptops are required, the price of the laptops has nearly doubled, whilst sales got off to a slow start.
