Microsoft Request Charity Laptop Redesign to Enable XP
Thu, 20 Dec 2007
Microsoft has called for a redesign of the One Laptop Per Child laptops so that Windows XP can be used as the machine’s operating system . Given Microsoft’s domination of the operating systems market, using XP, as opposed to the current Red Had Linux operating system, would enable access to thousands of Microsoft’s educational applications for Windows .

Microsoft are requesting that an additional port should be added to the XO laptop in order to improve its storage capacity, which currently stands at 1 GB. However, the proposed reduced version of Windows XP that would be used still needs 2 GBs of memory to operate.

Although the greater functionality that would accompany Microsoft’s involvement in the project is an undoubted advantage, the more sophisticated technology would also drive up the price of the laptop – which is already controversially high. Having been advertised as the $100 laptop, the cost of each machine currently stands at $188.
