The One Laptop Per Child scheme has enjoyed a rare piece of good news after Peru and Mexico announced they would purchase a combined 310,000 laptops . The Peruvian government have agreed to buy 260,000 laptops, whilst Mexicos entry into the scheme has been funded by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim friend of OLPC founder Nicholas Negroponte who has agreed to buy 50,000 for his country.
The non-profit organization has suffered a range of setbacks recently. In addition to the price hike of the laptops and the poor sales, a Nigerian-owned US-based company Lagos is suing the organization for patent infringement. However, Negroponte claims that since November 12th, OLPC has received almost £1 million in orders every day, which equates to around 190,000 laptops. Negroponte has previously states that 3 million laptops must be sold for the project to be viable.
