PC shipments are forecast to grow by 16.7 per cent in the final quarter of this year, according to IDC. IDCs Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker report again demonstrated the importance of laptop sales to the computer market, with the strong demand for laptops across the globe driving the increase in PC shipments.
IDCs predictions are undoubtedly influenced by the vast laptop sales during the third quarter, with worldwide shipments up by 37 per cent during the third quarter. If fourth quarter sales follow the pattern predicted, 2007s overall growth rate will stand at 14.6 per cent, up on the 10.1 per cent growth rate seen in 2006.
Such has been the success of laptops in recent years that manufacturers are now increasingly reliant on the portable machines. Global desktop sales are continuing to grow, though the rate at which they are growing is decreasing with every year as laptop sales surge.
