A study conducted by Microsoft and the mobile industry association has suggested that laptops with 3G or WiMax technology are failing to sell as well as they could due to their high price. The study suggested that notebooks with this built-in connectivity would appeal to a 70 million person audience, but prices must first tumble.
The study came as a response to a competition led by the GSM Association designed to find new broadband enabled laptops that will appeal to the mass market. The GSMA claim that several of the world's leading laptop manufacturers have shown an interest in developing the laptops. Such manufacturers are reported to include Dell , Lenovo and Fujitsu Siemens . The Association is hoping the price for any such laptop will be between £240 and £480.
The winning entry for the competition will be announced in February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and all entries must be submitted by 30th December.
