The worldwide chip market enjoyed a hugely successful third quarter, with microprocessor shipments hitting record levels. These record levels in microprocessor shipments reached a 14.3 per cent growth, whilst PC chip revenues increased even more, by 14.8 per cent to £3.86 billion.
Both AMD and Intel, the leading chip makers, enjoyed successful quarters with Intel controlling 76.3 per cent of the market, though AMDs share increased by 0.4 per cent.
It was the second quarter in a row that chip makers had exceeded expectations, with the success largely driven by the vast demand for laptops. With laptops an increasingly popular option around the world, demand for laptop processors jumped by 26.6 per cent in the third quarter.
