Laptop Chip Maker Release Smaller Processors
Tue, 20 Nov 2007
Intel has today released new Penryn processors that have been reduced in size. The new processors will be able to fit more transistors into each processor as a result of their small size, having reduced them from 64 nanometres to 45 nanometres.

The processors will be used in both desktops and servers under Intel’s Core 2 and Xeon brands. The California based chip giant has also attempted to guard itself from environmentalists by claiming the changes in size will not affect power consumption.

The news is the latest boost for Intel, who enjoyed a hugely successful third quarter, as microprocessor shipments hit record levels. Intel, who control over three-quarters of the chip making market, have seen their share prices increase by 25 per cent since the start of the year.

Meanwhile, rivals AMD will be feeling the heat in the wake of Intel’s technological development, with AMD reportedly unable to release a similar product until next year. AMD enjoyed a fairly successful third quarter as their share of the market increased by 0.4%, though this pales into insignificance when compared with rivals Intel.
