The One-Laptop-Per-Child project has received mixed news, with Rwanda making positive noises about the project though the Nigerian government have declined to take part.
Nortel Networks' John Visser revealed that the Rwandan government has pledged to buy a second laptop for every laptop brought to Rwanda. The news is a considerably positive move, with Nicholas Negroponte's Give 1 and Get 1 promotion meaning that customers in developed countries have the option to buy a laptop for around £200, which will see themselves get a laptop as well as a child in a developing country. The promise from the Rwandan government means for every one laptop purchased in a developing country, two children will each receive a laptop in a developing country. Negroponte's offer begins on November 12th.
However, the Nigerian government's decision to shun the project is a blow for Negroponte. Nigeria have instead placed an order for 17,000 Intel Classmate budget PCs, news which is particularly damaging given that Nigeria were one of the countries used to test the One-Laptop-Per-Child project.
