Acer Acquires Fellow Laptop Makers
Mon, 29 Oct 2007
Acer’s growth is set to accelerate further following its purchases of Gateway and Packard Bell . The last quarter showed a 58% increase in profits, largely thanks to a huge rise in demand for laptops, both in Europe and in developing countries. Having ended the third quarter in fourth place in the worldwide PC market with 8.1% of the market, Acer will finish third next time around following its recent acquisitions, overtaking Lenovo who finished the third quarter with 8.2% of the worldwide PC market.

Acer now has its eyes firmly on the leading duo of Hewlett-Packard and Dell . Hewlett-Packard dominate the world market with 19.6%, compared to Dell’s 15.2%, though Dell have the largest chunk of the US market with 28%. Recently merged into Acer, Gateway and Packard Bell themselves have significant chunks of the market. Gateway were the fourth-biggest PC maker in the US – just one of the reason’s for Acer splashing out £346 million for the firm. However, despite significant sales, Gateway had struggled outside Europe and the sale comes as welcome news for the firm.
