Acer Sales Up as Dell Recover
Mon, 08 Oct 2007
The laptop market continues to be as fierce as ever, though there have been significant changes in the hierarchy of laptop makers. Acer is now established as the world’s third best selling laptop maker, having overtaken Toshiba in the final quarter of last year. Acer has continued to grow with aggressive pricing securing the company’s entry into the European market. Following a poor end to 2006, Toshiba have continued to falter, as just one of several laptop manufacturers falling victim to Sony’s volatile battery problems.

Meanwhile, Dell have recovered from their poor end to 2006 recording operating income of £439m for the quarter ended August 3rd. Dell had been the main casualty of Sony’s battery problems with the American giants forced to recall more than 4 million units due to concerns over flammable batteries . However, Dell has been forced to shell out £79m as a result of expired stock options, its accounting investigation as well as paying off departed CEO Kevin Rollins. What’s more, problems have persisted, as the manufacturers have had to delay delivery dates on the new XPS M1710 as they struggle to produce enough units in the necessary time.
