The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project has thought of a novel electric power source in its bid to provide computers accessible to everyone. With many of the places the project is hoping to reach yet to have electric power installed, cows are being thought of as an alternative power source.
There are plans afoot to drive a dynamo through a system of belts and pulleys using cows, according to Arjun Sarwal who is working on behalf of the project. The dynamo will be taken from a Fiat car, of which there are plenty in nearby Mumbai . The idea was ventured after research into potential power sources showed that neither the sunlight, wind or water flow in the relevant areas were strong enough to provide sufficient electrical power.
A pilot test of the bargain laptops recently began in the Indian state of Maharashtra.
