Dell have made yet another production error, just a month after delaying shipments of its colourful selection of Inspiron laptops due to the paint being contaminated by dust. This time, Dell have been forced to delay delivery dates of the XPS M1710 laptop, as the American computer-hardware company have been unable to produce enough units in time. Dell have cited a shortage of LCD displays used in laptops and monitors as the main reason. Dell insist the problem is not specific to them, but instead there is a worldwide laptop components shortage.
However, with blunders such as this becoming less of an exception than the rule in recent times, customers will be extremely frustrated by these delays. Dell suffered a poor end to 2006 following problems with Sonys inflammatory batteries, necessitating the recall of over 4 million units. A third quarter operating income of £439m this year suggested their problems were behind them, though the latest setback will do their reputation no good whatsoever.
