PC sales grew significantly worldwide in the third quarter of 2007 according to data from both Gartner and International Data Corporation (IDC). Gartner figures revealed a 14.4% growth in the sale of units worldwide whereas IDC data suggests a 15.5% growth. The third quarter saw 68.5 million units sold globally.
Both market researchers concur that the growth has been driven by greater demand for laptops, particularly across Europe. Laptop prices have tumbled in recent months and years, with free laptops being offered to customers signing up for broadband deals, whilst laptops are becoming available in their own right for around £100 in some instances.
HP enjoyed a particularly successful quarter with sales up 17%, giving it the largest chunk of the world market on 19.6%. Dell is the second biggest vender with 15.2%, though dominates the US market with 28%. Lenovo just secured third place in the global stakes with 8.2% compared to Acers 8.1%, whilst Toshiba were fifth with 4.4%.
