Laptop sales have surpassed desktop sales in Europe, following widespread reductions in prices. Such is the appeal of the affordable laptops, information from the International Data Corporation (IDC) shows the lesser prices led to a 31% increase in sales between 2006 and 2007, whereas desktop sales grew by just 12%. There are instances of new laptops retailing at just £100, though broadband providers recently went one step further, offering a free laptop to any customer signing up to a two-year broadband deal.
Another of the reasons for the vast surge in laptop sales is the changing business world. As businesses become more mobile and multi-national, laptops are an increasingly useful tool allowing businessmen to work on the move and take their computer with them to meetings. Dell remains the leading laptop producer, though Acer are making significant progress, displacing Toshiba as the third best selling laptop maker.
