The One Laptop per Child organization has appointed Jorge G. Castañeda to its Board of Directors. Following a 2007 which saw over 100,000 XO laptops delivered worldwide, despite a series of problems, OLPC appear to be widening their target by including children in America as recipients of laptops, as well as those in developing countries.
The appointment of Castañeda, the former Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, is designed to aid the organizations development in Mexico and Latin America. The respected writers credentials are evidenced by his numerous honorary degrees and position as a Senior Associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace during the 1980s as well as being a Member of the Board of Human Rights Watch since 2003.
