Laptop sales to exceed desktop sales in 2009, expert says

A leading regional executive at Intel Corporation has revealed her expectation that laptop sales will exceed desktop sales by the end of 2009. Debjani Ghosh, the Sales and Marketing Director of Intel South East Asia, announced that she expects notebook sales to comprise 48 per cent of total computer sales this year, and predicts that figure will rise to 53 per cent during 2009. By 2011, Mrs Ghosh expects to see notebooks accounting for 59 per cent of total computer sales .

Mrs Ghosh spoke of the significance of technological advancements during 2003, which accelerated the notebook’s increasing popularity. Notebook sales accounted for 21 per cent of total computer sales in 2001, and grew by just 1 per cent during the following year. However, during the technological developments in 2003, particularly the improvement of microprocessors, laptops increased their share of total computer sales from 25 per cent in 2003 to 41 per cent in 2007.

Intel are currently focusing on expanding within the Philippines, where laptops accounted for 30 per cent of computer sales in 2007 according to Mrs Ghosh. Mrs Ghosh also reportedly revealed that ‘Singapore and some countries in the Asia-Pacific and Europe have already crossed over and are selling more notebook computers ’.
