The One Laptop Per Child Foundation and the Inter-American Development Bank have announced a deal to send thousands of laptops to Haiti . The agreement will see XO laptops sent to 13,200 students and 500 teachers in 600 Haitian primary schools. IDC are contributing $3 million towards the project, with OLPC contributing another $2 million.
By giving laptops to Haiti the Western Hemispheres poorest country this agreement will offer a stern test of Nicholas Negropontes belief that education can be enhanced in poor areas with the use of laptops. The XO laptop can be powered by car batteries, solar power or manual devices such as pedals, so powering the machines shouldnt be a problem despite Haitis poor infrastructure.
