Toshiba has revealed it is to pull out of the high definition DVD market, ending its rivalry with the Blu-ray format which has proved extremely popular in recent times. With major US film studies backing the Blu-ray format, and leading brands such as Sony displaying a clear preference for Blu-ray, Toshiba has become the last manufacturer to stop producing HD DVDs leaving Blu-ray as the industry standard format.
With Toshiba reluctantly accepting they must focus on other products, the Japanese outfit revealed the decision was catalysed by Warner Bros decision to only release its movies in the Blu-ray format. Warner Bros arent the only company to display a preference for Blu-ray, with 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney and MGM following a similar path, whilst Wal-Mart recently announced it would only sell HD discs in Blu-ray.
