LG Electronics have denied accusations that their laptop batteries are unsafe following an incident involving a South Korean journalists laptop . The laptop in question burst into flames having been fitted with a battery by LG Electronics affiliate LG Chem Ltd. Both the manufacturer and the journalists employers subsequently decided to launch investigations into the cause of the explosion.
However, LG Chem have since said they will not be recalling batteries used in LGs notebook computers as an independent test conducted by the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute said that the explosion was caused by an external shock under an extremely high temperature. The company stated they did not know what caused the high temperature, but under normal usage conditions, battery combustion would not be a concern.
