American Children to Receive Laptops from Non-Profit Organization
Fri, 18 Jan 2008
The One Laptop Per Child organization is to broaden its recipients, with some of the USA’s poorest children set to receive laptops from the non-profit organization. So far, the organization has focused on less developed countries, with the recent Give One Get One promotion resulting in over 100,000 laptops being sent to children in Afghanistan, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Haiti, Mongolia and Rwanda . Peru, Mexico and Uruguay are other examples of countries participating in the scheme.

The organization has now begun discussions with state governments about broadening the recipients of the XO laptops to include some of America’s poorest children. Initially, America had been left out of the One Laptop Per Child agenda as even the poorest parts of the US are considerably wealthier than some developing countries.

The recent success of the Give One Get One promotion has given the project a much needed boost at the turn of the year. Previously, scepticism had been rife regarding the need for laptops in developing countries, whilst the inflated price of the laptops offered further reasons for cynicism.
