Duo Announced 500GB Laptop Drives
Fri, 11 Jan 2008
Samsung and Hitachi look set to go head to head with both of the Asian conglomerates unveiling 500 gigabyte laptop drives. Hitachi were the first to unveil their capacious hard drive, with the device on sale from February. Samsung’s announcement followed days later, with their Spinpoint M6 500 gigabyte hard drive to go on sale in March.

Both of the devices dwarf the largest laptop drive currently available – Western Digital Corporation’s 320 gigabyte drive. Where Samsung have the edge is in the size of their drive, meaning it is compatible with many more laptop models. Whereas Hitachi’s drive is 12.5mm in height, meaning it cannot fit into many laptops, Samsung’s 500 gigabyte drive needs just 9.5mm.
