Duo to Donate Money from Laptop Sales to AIDS Medication
Mon, 28 Jan 2008
Dell and Microsoft have pledged to donate as much as $80 of every sale of each of their three new computer models towards AIDS medication in Africa . The duo have launched a new program called Product RED, with Dell set to sell two laptops and one desktop running Microsoft Windows Vista . For each laptop sold, the two companies will donate $50 to the Global Fund, which finances health programs in Africa, whilst an $80 donation will be made for each desktop sold.

Project RED is an ongoing program run by U2 singer Bono, and has so far raised $53 million for the Global Fund since its foundation in 2006. However, with Microsoft reportedly expecting to sell ‘several hundred thousand’ models in 2008, those behind Project RED hope to see that figure more than doubled in 2008. Bono also hit out at press reports questioning the effectiveness of the program, claiming it had saved lives, as evidenced by the fact that for $80, six months’ worth of AIDS-fighting medication can be purchased.
