The One Laptop Per Child organization's Give One Get One promotion proved to be a success, figures released by the non-profit outfit have shown. The offer ran from November 12th to December 31st, offering people in the United States and Canada the chance to buy a laptop and have another sent to a developing country.
The offer raised $35 million (£18 million) with the sale of over 100,000 XO laptops which will make their way to developing countries across the world. Recipient countries include Afghanistan, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Haiti, Mongolia and Rwanda . In addition to the money raised from the offer, it also helped to raise awareness of the project and increase participation amongst ordinary people.
The news comes as a welcome boost to the organization, who have been plagued by troubles. Following the increased cost of the laptops and cynicism over the need for laptops in such countries, a Nigerian company LAGOS are attempting to sue the non-profit organization for $20 million.
