Researchers at Stanford Tech are developing technology that will supposedly enable laptop batteries to last for as long as 40 hours. Although the technology is unlikely to be available for a few years, with current laptops rarely able to last 6 hours without a charge, the innovation would be a welcome advancement.
Professor Yi Cui and his team has revamped discarded technology whereby silicon anodes in the form of nanowires are used for charging. The technology has previously been abandoned as silicon expands up to 400 times during charging, which would cause the battery to explode. However, it is hoped that using silicon in the form of nanowires will eradicate this danger.
