The Carphone Warehouse has set a target of 1 million laptop sales this year as the company broadens its revenue base. The company are to invest £3 million in a six week training scheme for its 7,000 UK employees on the shop floor. The training period will culminate in a test which the employees must pass if they are to qualify to sell the products, and will be rewarded with an Acer laptop worth £360 if they pass the test.
Laptops represent an obvious area of expansion for the Carphone Warehouse, following a surge in the portable machines popularity. It is estimated that 7.6 million laptops will be sold this year, with 75 per cent of those sales coming from retail channels. Whilst the Carphone Warehouse have previously given away laptops with some broadband contracts, their expansion into the portable PC area is expected to see them take a double digit share of the laptop market this year.
Whilst the retailer is still offering free laptops with some 18 month broadband contracts, the new range of laptops they are offering could cost as much as £249 each on top of the cost of the broadband contract.
