Dell Offering Lost Laptop Protection Service
Wed, 02 Jul 2008
Dell has launched a service helping to protect against the effects of the loss or theft of a laptop . The Dell ProSupport Mobility Service has been available to business customers since Monday and enables Dell to track missing or stolen laptops, whilst they can also remotely erase data from any registered laptop’s hard drive. The service reflects the increasing popularity of laptops amongst business users, whilst also showing an awareness of the increasing number of missing or stolen laptops in recent times.

Dell recently sponsored a study carried out at the Ponemon Institute which looked at the number of laptops which are lost each week. The findings revealed that 12,000 laptops are lost at US airports alone each week, of which only a third are ever recovered. Furthermore, of those 12,000 laptops, 50 per cent contain confidential company data, 65 per cent of which is unsecured.

Dell laptops are enabled with a GPS device which enables the laptop to be tracked, whilst the laptop’s IP address can also be traced if it is connected to the internet having been stolen. However, in the case that the laptop cannot be recovered, the Remote Data Delete Service enables a hard drive to be wiped without direct access to the computer .
