Acer have unveiled their new low cost laptop, the Aspire One. Priced at $399, Acers chairman JT Wang has revealed he hopes to reach 5 million sales by the end of the companys current financial year. The laptop has an 8.9 inch screen, 512 megabytes of RAM, built in WiFi connection, an expandable memory of 4 GB and operates on either Linux or Windows . Furthermore, at 2.2 pounds, it weighs less than a kilogram.
Acer do, however, face strong competition in the low cost laptop market, which has become increasingly populated in recent years. By 2012, it is expected that low cost laptop sales will reach $3 billion, with over 9 million units sold. The fact that there were less than half a million sales in 2007, this indicates the considerable pace at which the market is expanding.
The laptops name is supposed to reflect the main aspiration of Acer as a company, to overtake Hewlett Packard as the leading laptop vendor. Despite recently slipping to third in the sales rankings for PC sellers, narrowly behind Dell, Acer are continuing to strengthen, and are expected to benefit from the acquisition of Gateway and Packard Bell .
