Hewlett Packard has retained its position as the leading vendor of laptops worldwide, whilst Dell and Acer continue to jostle for second place. Having fallen behind Acer last year, Dell recover its position as the second largest laptop seller, edging out Acer whose market share was 0.5 per cent less than its American rival.
Hewlett Packard shipped 6.46 million laptops during the first quarter of 2008, compared with Dells 4.68 million and Acers 4.53 million. The global laptop market has grown in recent years, as evidenced by the rapid growth of the last 12 months. Hewlett Packard have experienced a 29 per cent growth in the last year, Dell have seen a growth of 31 per cent whilst Acers laptop sales have increased by 24 per cent. Sales are expected to increase further with Dell looking to increase its retail presence and Acer benefitting from its takeover of Gateway and Packard Bell .
However, Sony endured a tough quarter slipping to ninth despite a 40 per cent increase in American shipments. That increase was offset by a 27 per cent slip in the EMEA region and a 40 per cent drop in the APAC region.
