PC Shipments Fuelled by Laptop Sales
Mon, 23 Jun 2008
The International Data Corporation has announced forecasts that worldwide PC shipments will grow significantly in 2008. Having revealed predictions in March that growth would reach 12.8 per cent in 2008, that figure has now increased to 15.2 per cent as the market continues to thrive. By the end of 2008, PC shipments are expected to reach 310 million units, with the increase largely fuelled by the popularity of notebooks .

Laptop shipments are expected to grow by 34.5 per cent by the end of 2008, exceeding the impressive growth of 22.9 per cent experienced in 2007. However, IDC predict that the surge in demand for the portable PCs will peak next year, with the increase in shipments falling to around 10 per cent. Those predictions have failed to deter manufacturers, however, who are instead attracted by the fact that laptops are set to comprise nearly half of global PC shipments this year. Consequently, manufacturers continue to release large numbers of laptops. Hewlett Packard, for example, released 17 new models this week, most of which are targeting the home and small business market.
