Auctioned Laptop Found to Contain Confidential Government Disk
Mon, 03 Mar 2008
A laptop sold on eBay has been found to contain a highly confidential disk belonging to the Home Office . A Lancashire based customer bought the laptop in good faith, but having taken the machine to the nearby computer technicians Leapfrog Computers, discovered a highly confidential CD belonging to the Home Office between the keyboard and the circuit board of the laptop.

Anti-terrorist officers were sent to confiscate the machine, and have now concluded their investigation as to how the CD ended up in the laptop. Both the laptop and the disk were encrypted, ensuring the confidential information was safeguarded.

The government is no stranger to losing information, having mislaid vast amounts of confidential information in recent months. The most significant case occurred when HM Revenue and Customs lost 25 million child benefit claimants’ details in the post.
