The design of the laptop sold by the One Laptop Per Child organization has won the first Brit Insurance Design Award. 40 year old Yves Behar spent three years developing the laptop, facilitating the education of children in Third World countries . The laptop was designed for the organization formed by Nicholas Negroponte, although the scheme has had to overcome a long line of setbacks.
The rising cost of the laptop has been one of the major problems, retailing at $188 rather than the initially advertised $100, resulting in widespread cynicism in the media. Such negativity has been furthered by the attitudes of education ministers in the relevant countries, who have questioned the need for laptops when other basic facilities are lacking. However, with an estimated 700,000 sales to date, the organization must be doing something right.
