Intel is in talks with several computer manufacturers over the possibility of launching a cheap laptop aimed at U.S. schoolchildren. Having enjoyed great success with its Classmate PC laptop which was sold amongst schoolchildren in other countries, the chip making giants appear to have turned their attention to the USA . The updated model is expected to cost around $500.
Intel have refused to name the manufacturers with whom they are in talks. Taiwanese company Elitegroup Computer Systems manufactured the low cost PC Intel retail in other countries, though it is unknown if they will be involved in this project. Intel did, however, reveal that testing of the first generation Classmate PC laptop is underway in California, Oregon and Texas as a form of trial prior to the introduction of a new low cost laptop .
