Following the withdrawal of HD-DVDs from the market, laptop manufacturers are franticly attempting to incorporate Blu-Ray drives into their newest laptops . Dell will soon introduce a laptop with a Blu-Ray drive, though at $1,000 for an apparently budget laptop, it is clear that Blu-Ray will prove to be an expensive feature for consumers.
One of the major concerns regarding the integration of Blu-Ray drives into laptops is the effect it will have on battery life. Given that Blu-Ray players use a very high powered laser to read the disc, battery life will be severely eroded. Furthermore, with software needed to decode the required data, both processing capability and battery life with be further reduced.
Manufacturers arent expected to reveal the battery life for Blu-Ray use only, though few laptops are expected to exceed 5 hours of battery life.
