Samsung has begun shipping its 500GB 2.5 inch hard drive, becoming the first manufacturer to do so. The Spinpoint M6 drive allows a huge 1TB of storage on notebooks which support dual hard drive configurations. The drive will cost £150, though it is not yet known which PC and laptop makers will be using the hard drive.
Samsung have beaten rivals Hitachi and Fujitsu in the race to dispatch the hard drive. All three have announced they are producing 500GB hard drives, though Samsung have done so fastest despite Hitachi being the first to announce it. The hard drives offered by Hitachi and Fujitsu are different to Samsungs, in that they are fitting in 500GB by expanding the height of the drive from 9.5mm to 12.5mm, meaning it may not fit in all notebooks. Whilst both the Samsung and Hitachi hard drives spin at 5,400rpm, Fujitsus is slower at 4,200rpm.
Whilst Samsung have already shipped their drive, Hitachi have delayed their shipment date from February to later this month, whilst Fujitsu are supposed to be shipping in May.
