Intel and
Asus have combined to launch a social networking site offering users the chance to design their ideal
laptop . Both companies have stated that the best ideas could well be put into production, whilst select participants will receive prizes. Visitors to the website are able to design their ideal
netbook,
notebook or
gaming machine, with each design subsequently rated by other website users. An
Intel statement said, Visitors to the site can share ideas, vote on submitted concepts and engage in discussions with other community members about the qualities of the dream PC.
The majority of suggestions to date are fairly unoriginal, with users calling for lighter, faster machines with a longer battery life. However, there have been some innovative ideas including a
PC with four legs so it can be used in bed, as well as a PC with three fold out displays to improve its ease of use for
graphic designers . Perhaps the best idea posted on the website to date is a mouse that generates power as it is used, thus helping to
reduce energy consumption .
The site follows in the footsteps of Dells IdeaStorm website, which attempted to gather customer opinions and led to the launch of new models with
Linux pre-installed.
