Intel’s new Pineview
processors are scheduled to start shipping soon and are expected to improve performance and
battery life of
netbooks . The chips are the second generation of
Atom processors, and will be able to deliver faster performance while using less power. The chips are able to use less power by integrating the graphics and memory controller into the CPU. The Atom processors were launched in 2008 aimed at small
laptops and netbooks with small screens and keyboards. Most netbooks on the market today have Atom processors, which fulfil basic functions such as
internet access and
word processing .
They are part of the Pine Trail platform aimed at improving netbook
PCs and low cost
desktops . The chips are currently being manufactured, samples have been given to
PC manufacturers and shipping is expected to begin in early January. As part of the improved performance, graphics will receive a boost, after
Intel was criticised for the graphics capabilities of its processors compared to Nvidia’s Ion platform.
The reduction of components in the latest processors could pave the way for thinner netbooks, experts have commented. Consumer groups hope that the reduction of chips will enable PC manufacturers to lower their prices.
