Hewlett Packard has reached an agreement with
Boston Power for its three year Sonata lithium-ion batteries. The
batteries are set to be used in 70 per cent of Hewlett Packard’s consumer
notebook line. The
laptops, which will be sold for $149.99 a piece, will fit into 18 of the manufacturer’s
notebooks, and will be sold either as part of a notebook, as an upgrade or as a retrofit.
The agreement follows Hewlett Packard’s announcement in December that it would sell the
Sonata technology as the ‘HP Enviro Series’, pricing the batteries at $20 to $30 over its other batteries. The batteries are guaranteed to last for three years.
Boston Power’s founder and chief executive, Christina Lampe-Onnerud, said, ‘It's a celebration of the number-one player in the market re-embracing innovation. I think that's pretty rare, and a testament to their slogan, 'HP: Invent'.’
Hewlett Packard have become the second major
PC manufacturer to use the three year batteries after
Apple incorporated a three year battery into its latest
MacBook Pro laptop . It is not known where Apple’s long lasting batteries are manufactured, though Mrs Lampe-Onnerud confirmed that Boston Power do not produce their three year batteries.
