The Vice President of Product
Marketing at
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has labelled
netbooks as inadequate. Leslie Sobon believes
AMD made the right decision when opting to back ultrathin
laptops as
netbook PCs are only sufficient for browsing the
internet and
email according to Sobon. Indeed, AMD’s executives believe that consumers are buying netbooks for all the wrong reasons. AMD forecast that consumers will become disillusioned with the limited functionality of netbooks having bought the mini
notebooks simply for their portability and appearance.
AMD’s Senior Manager of Product Market was more diplomatic on the issue, saying that a netbook was simply ‘what you define it as’. His comments are convenient as the Ferrari One has been the subject of mixed product descriptions by manufacturer
Acer and AMD. Acer is marketing the
PC as a netbook, while AMD are calling it an ultrathin.
Regardless of its description, the garish
laptop has an AMD Athloon X2 Dual Core L310 processor, a 1366x768 display, 2GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive and an 11.6 inch screen. Priced at £400, Acer should maybe hope it has greater functionality that the typical netbook, which tend to be significantly below the £400 barrier.
