Acer Plans Chrome OS Netbook
Thu, 01 Apr 2010
The world’s third-largest PC makers are raising the chances for Google’s Anroid operating system of becoming a widely used alternative to Windows on mobiles and computers . Acer’s relationship with Google means we could be in store for an Acer netbook running the Chrome operating system in Q3 2010.

Acer’s Senior Corporate Vice President and President of IT Product Business Group at Acer, Jim Wong announced that the company was looking to shift over one million netbooks running the new operating system in 2010. Google’s operating system is freely distributed by Google and netbooks running the software would cost much less. However, Wong would not give a specific figure but did praise Android’s fast boot-up time.

The move is a step forward for Google as its operating system spreads from smartphones to netbooks, with the simplistic platform likely to gain acceptance from a number of other manufactures.

Acer has high hopes for the new operating system and has stated that seven percent of all its netbooks in 2010 will run the new operating system. Acer have also joined the app band wagon, with Wong declaring that the company will be creating an app store for the netbook to download widgets and apps also applicable to the company’s smart phone range.
