Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) are trying to make their processors more power-efficient in an effort to improve laptop battery life, according to technology analysts. AMD have made significant gains in terms of market share in recent quarters, making 12.1 per cent of global microprocessor shipments in the fourth quarter of 2009, an increase of 1.6 per cent on the same quarter of 2008. However, that figure remains hugely behind Intel, who hold an 80.6 per cent share of the global microprocessor market.
Having successfully eroded a degree of Intels dominance with netbook PCs, AMD now appears to be targeting laptops and notebooks, and currently enjoys a high 20s market share of desktop processors, according to Dirk Meyer, the CEO of AMD.
Efforts to improve its processors for laptop PCs does not mean AMD are turning their attention away from the netbook market, however. Indeed, the companys low-power Bobcat chip is currently under review as AMD seeks to fit processors into small devices such as tablet computers.
Experts have said that AMD enjoy a price advantage over their rivals Intel, though it remains the case that Intel chips provide better performance.
