Asus Launches Laptop with Switchable Graphics
Fri, 23 Apr 2010
Asus has launched its first laptop to incorporate Nvidia’s Optimus technology – a new graphics system aimed at balancing performance and battery life. The technology automatically switches between integrated and discrete graphics functions whenever necessary, meaning that the Nvidia graphics only become active when the user launches software that is graphics-intensive. When not in use, however, the laptop instead uses the integrated graphics, enabling a longer battery life.

The Asus N61JV is being marketed as a multimedia entertainment system, featuring a 16 inch high definition screen, Altec Lansing speakers and SRS Premium Sound. The notebook PC has several features which would not be out of place in a desktop computer, including an Intel 2.27GHz Core i5-430M processor. Among the laptops other features are a Blu-ray combo drive, a 500GB hard drive and 4GB DDR3 memory.

Some notebooks already support switchable graphics systems, though they require the user to manually switch modes, whereas the new system from Nvidia offers seamless and automatic transition. Whereas manufacturers are largely focusing on the affordable netbook market, the N61JV will not be cheap, and is expected to retail from £949.
