Laptop Chip Manufacturer Posts Hefty Profit
Wed, 14 Apr 2010
American chip manufacturer Intel has reported a 388 per cent increase in first quarter profits. The £1.59 billion net income was a first quarter record for the company, and represented a huge increase on the same quarter of 2009 which saw a net income of £410 million. The increase in profit can be largely attributed to the improved sales performance as the PC market continued to recover from the recession-prompted slump. Overall, sales rose by 44 per cent to £6.7 billion, causing Chief Executive Paul Otellini to voice his optimism about the company’s prospects for the year ahead.

Intel, which is the first major technology company to post its results in 2010, expects similar sales of £6.6 billion in the second quarter. The results are good news not just for Intel, but for the personal computer and laptop industry – the performance of which is typically reflected in Intel’s results.

Intel has long since been the leading global chip manufacturer, though the rise of netbook PCs has seen other chip manufacturers such as AMD gain market share. Notebooks and desktops remain almost universally reliant on Intel chips, though the diversification of the market and advent of more sophisticated mobile phones is expected to dilute Intel’s market share.
