Laptop Users Unhappy with Internet Speeds
Mon, 12 Apr 2010
Almost half of broadband users are not happy with the speeds they are receiving from their internet service providers, a new survey has revealed. The survey was conducted by ISPreview and found that 44 per cent of the 957 internet users questioned are not happy with the broadband speeds they receive. The finding follows a number of media reports in recent months and years highlighting the disparity between advertised internet speeds and the real speeds enjoyed by desktop and laptop PC users.

A recent investigation by Ofcom, in which fake consumers tested broadband providers for their compliance with the Code of Practice, revealed that 74 per cent of customers were not told that their internet speed was likely to be lower than the speed advertised, while 42 per cent had to prompt the provider late in the phone call for their internet speed.

With broadband becoming a near-universal feature of British homes, more attention has been given to this issue. The increase in the number of people using laptops and therefore WiFi has also contributed to a broadening of this discussion, as new devices such as netbooks and even mobile phones become increasingly reliant on internet use.
