Mini Laptop Market Strong Despite Slowdown and iPad Launch
Tue, 06 Apr 2010
Apple has enjoyed a relatively successful launch of its stylish iPad, with the company announcing it sold more than 300,000 of the devices on its first day. First day figures included pre-orders, though it remains to be seen whether the iPad reaches the 525,000 iPhones sold over the course of the mobile phones launch weekend. Since unveiling the supposedly revolutionary device, experts have been divided as to the worth of the iPad, though Apple fanatics have firmly supported the device, parting with between $499 and $829 for an iPad in America.

Suggestions that the iPad will herald the end to the netbooks rapid rise have been given credence by figures from IDC, which revealed a considerable slowdown in the growth in sales of the mini laptops . Growth fell to 33.6 per cent as 4.8 million units were sold, compared with a growth of 872 per cent in the first quarter of 2009. Suggestions that netbook PCs will no longer sell in the same volumes are likely to be proved wrong, with IDC forecasting that 47 million netbooks will sell in 2010 compared with 15 million iPads.

The first generation model of the iPad has WiFi connectivity but no 3G functionality, so internet access on the move will be restricted to WiFi areas.
